They contacted us and said we need a website. However, by the time we had discussed everything, we really needed to define what message they wanted to convey.  Tattoos are a very competitive market, but even though it is competitive and tattoo connoisseurs are all very loyal. We needed to figure out who we are going to target. We determined they needed to capture the upper middle class, young professional who appreciates art and self-expression whom through tattoos is will willing to spend, 3 or 4 thousand dollars to have their body illustrated.

We wanted to sell sexy. We wanted to show that real people can have a tattoo and be ok.  Those people with tattoos are just like everyone else. They care about each other, they have love, they have fights, they are part of the real world. It’s no longer just sailors and thugs who get tattooed. We needed to essentially validate tattoos as an art form, so a lot of our design was to be very elegant and appealing.

Anyone with more than one tattoo understands that they need to choose an artist and that each artist, like in any other art medium, has their own style and their own methods. You have to gravitate toward the artist that will do what you like, the way you like it. So we had to show each individual artist as a separate artist.

We created interactive effects throughout the site that focus on the artist first. Together with the client, we defined specific styles that each artist specialized in. So that from first viewing the site, someone who is looking to have a tattoo and is willing to spend a significant amount of money and time would know early on who they might want to gravitate to. Not only by their work but by their style. We developed the website allows an audience to instantly navigate by artist, by style, or by both.
